Bank Millennium is introducing QR code-based identity verification

Bank Millennium is expanding the capabilities of its Millennium ID service by introducing identity verification via a QR code scanned by a smartphone. This is the first solution of its kind on the Polish banking market. The new feature allows users to verify their identity on a computer without having to enter a username and password in their browser.

The process is simple. When logging in to a selected public or commercial service, the user scans the QR code displayed on the computer screen using the Bank Millennium mobile app. They then approve the transaction within the app. The entire process takes place within Millennium ID, which utilises the mojeID infrastructure developed by the National Clearing House.

In practice, this means a further shift of the identification process to the mobile app. The bank had previously enabled customers to confirm their identity directly within the app whilst using services on their smartphone, eliminating the need to log in to online banking. The new solution extends this model to scenarios carried out on a computer as well.

This trend is part of wider changes taking place in the financial sector. Banks are increasingly using mobile apps as their primary point of contact with customers, combining ease of use with security mechanisms based on biometrics or PIN codes. In the case of Millennium ID, the app becomes the central tool for identity verification, both for public administration services and with commercial partners.

The roll-out also covers customers using mDowód within the mObywatel app. This is yet another example of the integration of banking with state-run digital identification systems, which are designed to reduce the amount of paperwork carried out in the traditional way.
